Today I’m reviewing a classic matte red lipstick from Illamasqua ~ shade Maneater.

My take on the product
Illamasqua lipsticks come in a luxe black packaging with the brand logo monogrammed on the cover. I like the look of the packaging but the lipsticks are a little wobbly at the base sometimes. Coupled with the fact that some of the texture are very dry mattes, you could easily end up with a broken lipstick (which happened with my first one, Eurydice).
Maneater is a matte finish lipstick and has a really dry texture. It is quite intensely pigmented but with the stiff texture, its not a great experience using this lipstick. One definitely need heavily moisturized lips to wear this color otherwise the lipstick tugs and pulls at the lips during application. On the bright side, it is not heavily staining and doesn’t settle into lip lines. It wears well for 4-6 hours on me depending on what I eat in between. Overall, I’m a little disappointed with how dry this lipstick is. I’ve used many stellar matte formulas before that have been more forgiving or least, easier to use.

Maneater is described as a classic cherry red by Illamasqua and the description is quite true. But on my skin, it looks much warmer, almost orange-toned especially when worn with warm eye/cheek makeup. I’ve worn it with pink blush and it looks more neutral/cool toned when paired with cool toned eyes/cheeks. I guess this is one of those shades that looks different on different skin tones. I actually find it very interesting and versatile and despite the disappointing formula, I’m glad I have this red in my kit!

The GOOD about Illamasqua lipstick Maneater :
- Luxurious black packaging
- Intense pigmentation
- Doesn’t stain heavily
- Good staying power
- Doesn’t bleed/feather
- Versatile red shade
- Dry, stiff texture
- Tugs at the lips, cannot be worn without balm
- A little wobbly at the base
Overall Verdict
Illamasqua lipstick in Maneater is a classic cherry red which may appear warmer on some skin tones depending on the undertones and how you wear it. I like the versatility of the shade but it doesn’t make up for the fact that the formula is disappointing. It is just too dry to be worn without a heavy layer of balm underneath and while it is intensely pigmented, the stiff texture just takes away its beauty. On the bright side though, it doesn’t stain too heavily and doesn’t feather/bleed as it wears.
